Platform shoes have a raised sole across the entire footprint, adding height while distributing weight more evenly than a heel alone. They're popular in alternative fashion for the visual impact they add to outfits and their strong associations with gothic, punk, rave, and lolita subcultures going back to the 1970s.

Platform shoes are generally more comfortable than high heels of the same total height because the raised front reduces the actual incline your foot is walking on. Start with lower platforms (3–5cm) if you're new to them, and practise on flat surfaces before wearing to events.

Lower platform styles (3–5cm) in sneaker, loafer, or sandal silhouettes are practical for everyday use. Taller platform boots and heels are better reserved for events, concerts, and occasions where practicality is less important than impact.
