The types, and what each one does
Chest harnesses run across the chest and around the torso, usually anchored at the shoulders. They are the most recognisable type and the most versatile — worn over a tee, a bodysuit, a shirt or bare skin, they read cyberpunk, industrial, goth or punk depending on what is underneath.
Bra harnesses frame the bust with straps, often combining a choker element with a chest structure. They sit closer to the body than a chest harness and work as a visible layer over or under clothing.
Choker harnesses anchor at the neck with straps descending onto the chest or shoulders. They are the smallest, cheapest and easiest entry point into the category, and they read the aesthetic instantly.
Waist harnesses sit at the waist and define it, functioning somewhere between a belt and a corset. They are the most wearable option in ordinary settings.
Full body harnesses connect chest, waist and sometimes legs into a single strap system. They are the strongest statement in the collection and demand the most from the rest of the outfit.

Materials, and how they behave
Leather and synthetic leather are the classic choices. Real leather softens and moulds with wear and has genuine heft; synthetic leather gives the same appearance with easier care, lower weight and no break-in period.
Elastic and stretch constructions in spandex, nylon and polyester blends are the most comfortable for long wear, adjust more forgivingly across body shapes, and sit flat under a jacket. If you plan to wear a harness for a whole evening, this is the material to look at.
Rubberized fabric delivers a matte technical surface that suits cyberpunk and industrial outfits particularly well. Cotton, rayon and viscose appear in softer woven-strap designs.
Hardware runs to alloy, metal, aluminium, plastic and resin for O-rings, D-rings, sliders, buckles and clips. Since these components carry all the tension in a harness, they are the first thing to check when comparing two similar pieces — a failed slider makes a harness unwearable regardless of how good the straps are.
Fit and adjustment: the part that decides everything
A harness that does not adjust far enough is not a harness, it is a decoration you cannot wear. This is the most important thing to check before ordering.
Read the adjustment range listed on the product page, not just the size label. Take your own measurements at the points the harness will sit — chest or bust circumference, underbust, waist, and thigh circumference for garters — and check that your measurements sit comfortably inside the stated range rather than at its extreme end. A harness fastened at the very last hole will not stay comfortable.
Look at the number of adjustment points too. A harness with adjusters at the shoulders, sides and back can be fitted properly to almost any torso; one with a single adjuster cannot.

How to wear one
The base layer decides the register completely. Over a plain black tee, a harness reads as everyday alternative dressing and is the easiest way to wear one in public. Over a mesh top or bodysuit, it becomes cyberpunk or club wear. Over bare skin, it is at its most striking and its most exposed. Over a shirt or blouse, it produces a strange, effective tension between formal and hard that suits industrial and post-apocalyptic outfits.
A bodysuit is the best possible base, because it gives an unbroken surface with no waist gap for straps to bunch against.
The other principle worth following: if the harness is complex, keep everything else simple. A full body strap system over a busy printed outfit becomes visual noise. Against plain black, it reads as design.
Where harnesses fit by style
Central to cyberpunk and industrial dressing, where the strap-and-hardware vocabulary is the aesthetic. Long-standing in punk and goth, layered over tees, corsets and mesh. Increasingly common in rock and biker outfits as an alternative to more jewellery. And useful in steampunk when the straps are leather with brass-tone fittings.

Care
Wipe leather and synthetic leather with a damp cloth rather than soaking them, and let them dry away from direct heat. Condition real leather occasionally. Elastic and fabric harnesses can usually be hand washed cold — check the product page — but should never be tumble dried, since heat destroys elastic permanently.
Store harnesses flat or hung rather than balled up, and avoid leaving them fastened tightly for long periods, which sets creases into straps.
