The 7 Coolest Alternative Shopping Destinations Around The Globe
Embarking on a study abroad adventure has allowed me to explore numerous distinctive locales. Even though I don't usually purchase much while travelling, I'm always fascinated by visiting different shopping areas and markets to observe the diverse array of products available in each city or country. In this article, I'll share my top seven must-visit alternative street markets and shopping areas worldwide, some of which I've personally experienced, and the rest are on my bucket list for future travels.
First Option - Camden Market, London, U.K.
During my time in London, I was immediately introduced to Camden by local friends who recommended it for its fantastic punk scene. Camden Market is loaded with an array of shops, food stands, and restaurants that can feel a bit overwhelming, but in the best way possible.
Be sure to venture inside the actual market, located within a series of buildings, to find stores selling vintage rock tees, magic shops, and street art stands. And don't overlook trying the orange juice stand at the entrance!
Second Option - Djemaa el- Fna, Marrakech, Morocco.
Though I haven't yet visited Morocco, the Djemaa el- Fna market in Marrakech has certainly earned a spot on my bucket list. This market offers an incredible selection of homewares, decor, traditional tapestries, painted pottery, and accessories like silk scarves and handmade jewellery.
Open 24 hours, Djemaa el- Fna is a bustling public square filled with merchants, entertainers, shops, and food places that attract both tourists and locals alike.
Third Option - St. Mark's Place, New York City, U.S.A.
As a college student in New York City, I've explored various neighbourhoods, including the Lower East Side, which has become particularly popular with younger crowds. A must-see shop on St. Mark's Place is "Search and Destroy," which offers a fascinating mix of vintage clothing, dolls, shoes, and other unique items.
Another notable store, Trash and Vaudeville, recently relocated to 96 East 7th Street but remains a go-to place for skinny black jeans and Doc Martens.
Fourth Option - Takeshita Dori, Tokyo, Japan
The Harajuku area in Tokyo is known for its vibrant fashion scene, particularly the Kawaii style, which is showcased along Takeshita Dori. This bustling street is lined with restaurants, shops, and people, making it a great place to explore and discover one-of-a-kind items.
Even if traditional Harajuku clothing isn't your style, you can find unique punk accessories and clothing with plenty of buckles, chains, and embellishments to spice up your wardrobe.
Fifth Option - LX Factory, Lisbon, Portugal
LX Factory may not look like much from the outside, but inside you'll find a vibrant collection of street art, shops, and restaurants. With plenty of photo opportunities and unique speciality shops, LX Factory is a must-visit destination during your trip to Lisbon. Don't forget to grab a bite at the highly recommended Burger Factory restaurant.
Sixth Option - French Quarter, New Orleans, U.S.A.
The rich culture of New Orleans is on full display in the French Quarter, where you can explore authentic voodoo shops, browse handcrafted gifts, and even get a tarot card reading. Steer clear of the tourist traps on Bourbon Street, and instead, head to Dumaine Street for a more genuine experience.
Seventh Option - Myeongdong Shopping District, Seoul
The bustling Myeongdong Shopping District offers a perfect blend of mainstream stores and speciality shops. Be sure to visit Sacksang, an art store owned by artist Keum Dong-won, for unique scarves, bags, and watches based on his original art. And don't miss the chance to stock up on exclusive Korean beauty products while you're there!
