Brown is where steampunk lives. The whole aesthetic is built on brass, leather and tan rather than on silver and black, and a brown coat is the single garment that makes a steampunk outfit cohere instead of reading as a gothic outfit with goggles attached.
This filter covers brown and coffee tones across the coat range. Long military-influenced cuts with brass or antiqued buttons and multiple closures. Victorian tailoring in wool and worsted fabric, fitted through the body and flared below the waist. Faux leather and patent in tan through to dark chocolate. Velvet and jacquard for the dressier end, and faux fur trim at collars and cuffs.
The practical case for brown over black: hardware. If your belts, buckles, pendants and boot fittings are brass or copper — which they will be if you dress steampunk — a brown coat ties them together where black fights them. It also opens up a palette black closes down: cream, oxblood, forest green and khaki all sit comfortably against brown, and a cream high-collared blouse under a brown coat is one of the most reliable combinations in this entire collection.
Worth knowing on care: brown shows water marks and sun fading more than black does. Dry at room temperature rather than near a radiator, and keep leather conditioned.
Sizes run XXS through 7XL. Check the measurement table and allow room for a corset or layered skirt underneath — a fitted Victorian coat sized to bare measurements will not close over the outfit it was bought for.
