Grunge Clothing

Grunge was never a look that anybody designed. It came out of Pacific Northwest thrift stores in the late eighties because that was what was cheap and warm, and it survived every attempt the fashion industry made to sell it back. The rules are simple: nothing should look new, nothing should look considered, and everything should look like it has been worn for three days straight. Our grunge collection gives you the components — oversized layers, distressed denim, worn-in tees, heavy footwear and the accessories that hold it together.

The trick with grunge is that looking effortless takes a small amount of effort. These are the pieces that make it easy.

Denim, distressed and otherwise

Jeans are the foundation. Grunge denim wants to look lived in — faded washes, distressed knees, raw hems, and a loose or straight cut rather than anything tailored. High-waisted styles work well because they hold the shape when everything above them is oversized.

Wide leg pants extend the same idea further, giving you the volume that defines the nineties silhouette. Cargo pants add pockets and utility without breaking the aesthetic. If you own one pair of grunge bottoms, make it dark distressed denim in a relaxed straight cut — it works under every layer in the collection.

Tees, camisoles and the base layer

The base layer is where grunge does most of its work, because it is usually visible under everything else. The collection covers T-shirts, crop tops, camisoles, mesh tops and buckle strap tops. A slip-style camisole worn under an oversized layer is one of the defining grunge combinations, and it works as well now as it did in 1992.

Mesh tops layer under or over almost anything and add texture without weight. Crop tops pair with high-waisted denim and pleated skirts for the schoolyard-gone-wrong version of the look. T-shirts should be soft, slightly oversized, and preferably in washed black, charcoal or faded colour rather than crisp new fabric.

Skirts, layering and the feminine side of grunge

Grunge has always mixed hard and soft. Pleated skirts over ripped tights with heavy boots is a cornerstone combination. Skirts in general — plain, pleated, or mini — sit well against oversized knits and open shirts, and the contrast between a delicate hemline and a battered boot is the entire point.

Dresses in the collection follow the same logic: soft fabrics, floral or plain, worn deliberately against heavy footwear and a layer of something rougher on top. The grunge dress is never worn as a dress on its own — it is worn as a layer.

Outerwear, capes and layering pieces

Layering is the grammar of grunge. Hooded tops give you the easy everyday layer. Capes bring drama for the more theatrical end of the style. Corset belts — an addition the nineties never had but that works remarkably well — cinch an oversized layer at the waist and stop the whole silhouette from disappearing.

The layering rule that makes grunge work: at least one layer should be visibly too big, and at least one should be fitted. All-oversized reads as sloppy, all-fitted reads as something else entirely. The mismatch is the style.

Footwear and accessories

Sneakers are the grunge default — worn, scuffed and unglamorous. Chunky soles and canvas uppers sit best against distressed denim, and the more beaten they look, the more correct they are.

Bandanas are the accessory that defines the era: worn as a headband, knotted at the neck, tied to a bag strap or hanging from a back pocket. They cost very little and they instantly locate an outfit in the right decade.

Swimwear in the collection extends the aesthetic into summer, for anyone who does not want to abandon the palette in July.

The grunge palette and fabric

Colour is where grunge separates itself from other alternative styles. Black is present but not dominant — the palette leans into faded burgundy, mustard, forest green, washed navy, grey, brown and off-white, all looking slightly sun-bleached. Plaid and check patterns are foundational.

Fabric-wise, look for cotton, denim, knitted fabric and flannel-weight woven fabrics. The texture should be soft and slightly worn. Anything with a sharp finish or a synthetic sheen belongs in a different collection.

How to shop this collection

Use the product type filter to jump to jeans, tees, skirts or sneakers directly. Use the colour filter to build a coherent palette — grunge outfits work best when the colours look like they faded together rather than being bought together.

Size filters cover XXS to 5XL in clothing and US 4 to 17 in footwear. Gender filters cover women's, men's and unisex cuts, and a large share of grunge dressing is genuinely unisex — oversized shirts and tees work across the board.

Material filtering helps you separate the soft cottons and knits from the structured pieces. And the availability filter distinguishes In Stock items, which ship from current inventory, from Custom Made pieces produced to order — check the product page for lead times if you are buying against a deadline.

How to actually wear it

Build from the bottom. Distressed jeans or a pleated skirt with tights, a soft tee or camisole, an oversized layer over the top, sneakers or heavy boots, and a bandana somewhere. That is the formula, and it has not changed in thirty years because it works.

The only real mistake is looking too finished. Grunge is a style that rewards restraint in the wrong direction — leave the shirt untucked, leave the layer unbuttoned, and do not iron anything. If the outfit looks like you thought about it for more than ninety seconds, take something off.

Start with the denim and the footwear. Those two decisions define the outfit, and everything else in the collection layers over the top of them without much thought required.

FAQ

What is grunge fashion?

Grunge came out of Pacific Northwest thrift stores in the late eighties because that was what was cheap and warm. It runs on oversized layers, distressed denim, soft worn-in tees, plaid, heavy or scuffed footwear and a faded palette. Nothing should look new, and nothing should look carefully planned.

What is in the grunge collection?

Distressed jeans, wide leg pants and cargo pants, T-shirts, crop tops, camisoles, mesh tops and buckle strap tops, dresses, skirts and pleated skirts, hooded tops, capes, corset belts, sneakers, bandanas and swimwear.

How do I get the grunge layering right?

At least one layer should be visibly too big and at least one should be fitted. All-oversized reads as sloppy and all-fitted reads as a different style entirely — the mismatch is the point. A slip-style camisole under an oversized layer is the classic combination and still works.

What colours should I look for?

Grunge is less black-dominated than other alternative styles. The palette leans on faded burgundy, mustard, forest green, washed navy, grey, brown and off-white, all looking slightly sun-bleached, with plaid and check as the recurring patterns. Colours work best when they look like they faded together rather than being bought together.

Which fabrics suit the look?

Cotton, denim, knitted fabric and flannel-weight woven fabrics, all soft and slightly worn. Anything with a sharp finish or a synthetic sheen belongs to a different aesthetic. Use the material filter to compare, and check the composition listed on each product page.

Can grunge work for a woman's wardrobe as well as unisex?

Yes. Alongside the unisex oversized shirts and tees, the collection includes pleated skirts, dresses, camisoles and crop tops. Pairing a delicate hemline with a battered boot or a scuffed sneaker is one of the defining grunge combinations, and the contrast is the whole idea.
